Self-development can pigeon hole you into roles and not allow you to move forward on your self-determined career path. I say it's self-determined because direct management is focused on maintain their fiefdoms and tend to roadblock any disruption to that regardless of the overall benefit to the organization. Long term career paths at TMP typically involve leaving the organization and returning into roles that were sought while the employee was trying to work through what standard advancement protocol would dictate as the proper procedures. Once employees are in these positions, they tend to stay for many years which creates stale and stagnant thinking and not only holds TMP back from staying truly competitive and disruptive in their space but creates roadblocks to career growth for other employees.
