Just bumping along, on life support

Pros

Good people. Free snacks. Some cool technology. I worked in the games group (GameHouse) and it was just years of bad decisions, cruddy leadership and always-too-late ideas. Lots of good people were let go, but more than that the people left behind had very little hope of success.

Cons

Executive management is a mess. Lost their innovate edge years ago, just trying to stay alive. Not sure why the people in charge were in charge, except as cases of nepotism and tenure.

Pros

Good work/life balance depending on projects. Fascinating tech to learn if you have the patience to navigate the changing use case landscape and ethical challenges

Cons

Executive leadership attempting a culture change but too many people talking at the same time to make meaningful discoveries. Constant change of plans for areas of focus and no clear target verticals can create headaches.

Pros

No full-stack here, which is great! Everyone has the opportunity to specialise (every development team does it's own thing). Also, if you are not happy with current technology, you can easily switch to another team. (RealNetworks is a multimedia company, they invented internet streaming back in the 90-ties)

Cons

Maybe not the greatest communication of tasks by management.

HMS Titanic - Rudderless and Slowly Sinking

Pros

* There are some amazingly great people who really care about the product and user experience. * The Seattle HQ is an impressive building * The cafe has some free drinks and snacks * Great if you want to work on some good technologies to bump up your resume. * HR team and benefits are quite good.

Cons

* The really great people who care about the product and user experience are not listened to by mgmt. If they did not come up with the idea, it does not exist * The impressive HQ building is mostly empty and empty spaces are the norm. * Insane work hours chasing ever changing "shiny objects" or pet ideas of management. Getting an email at 10PM for a "just added" 7AM meeting is not uncommon. * Many of the vacated positions are either not backfilled or are shipped to overseas countries where the senior management came from. * Burning through money with overseas boondoggles.

Pros

Smart changes to architecture, wholehearted adoption of cloud technologies, interesting and forward-looking international cloud footprint.

Cons

legacy focus on selling selling music through wireless carriers and online gaming means an internal culture conflict with changing network design. Company leadership had reached a realization that corporate direction wasn't right and began repeated downsizing and building a new data-center. Network people were top-notch but their management regularly playing defense in turf battles.

Cons

1. Senior management seemed inept 2. Lack of direction, no clear focus 3. Serious lack of good product ideas 4. The doers are there, but they're not given importance 5. Employee morale is on the lower side, quite some negativity in the air

Pros

Decent pay and benefits that got progressively worse with time

Cons

The leader of this company has frittered away their initially brilliant technology, squandered $600 million from the Microsoft settlement and run off some extremely talented senior people through his megalomaniac style and unwillingness to listen to any rational ideas about how to market some decent ideas after the RealPlayer lost it's steam. An incredible waste of what was the best technology to change the internet in the 1990s and early 2000s.
