Pros

I had a great job before I joined Remote. It felt very risky to leave but I wanted something new and Remote came knocking. It's a wonderful company. The people are kind, the mission is great and the async way of communicating has helped me structure my life in a much better way. I love the messy start up vibe so I'm happy with the pace and the level of change. The people team are stellar, probably one of the main reasons I took the job. The level of experience and drive tied with the kindness of the team is amazing.

Cons

Would like better benefits (pension specifically) but hopefully that will come with time

Lots of hype, lacking substance

Pros

Remote working, lots of good people.

Cons

If the primary value proposition you promote is a picture of a laptop with a "look where I'm working from now" picture - you don't understand what a true EVP is. The recruiting process is good, but the job you are hired for can change completely by the time you come on board, or shortly thereafter, with little or no communication (horrible approach). Remote has grown significantly over the past 12 months, but has lacked the vision around how to scale in a way that isn't detrimental to Operations or employees. Infrastructure across all departments is woefully lacking, as is the confidentiality of data. Creating efficiencies is a high priority, however, basic efficiency tools such as MS Office or Google Suite are considered outdated and off limits. Notion is the tool of choice. While Notion has value, replacing MSOffice or Google Suite in totality isn't its strength. Notion is one of many large, frustrating, time sucks at Remote. The company operates in both work and communication overload. People at all levels are stretched, stressed, frustrated and in many instances - resigned to the chaos that is Remote. Employees are told to "provide input and update as you go" - this rarely occurs because of time constraints. The company communicates a "single source of truth." The reality is that there is no single source of truth at any stage in the process. Disappointingly, the CEO communicates to employees the need for a work-life balance, and not to work long days or weekends, which is completely contrary to the reality of work at Remote. Standards and processes vary widely across departments - there is little to no consistency. Lots of time and effort are wasted on multiple departments working on solving similar business problems in isolation. Planning across departments is discouraged - it's a "waste of time and slows us down." It's mind-boggling that so many business basics are disregarded in this business - to its own detriment.

Hi there, thank you so much for taking the time to write this review and sharing your thoughts with us which are always welcome. There seems to be different matters described in your review and below we will do our best to address them all. In relation to what you state as Pro’s - we’re happy that you felt that you were surrounded by great professionals and individuals. Our mission is to build an awesome team and be an example when it comes to remote working. That said, by no means, have we ever said there is no room for improvement. When it comes to EVP (Employee Value Proposition for those reading the review) we have rolled out a lot of initiatives and programs to support our team members and give them opportunities to grow and develop their careers. We are proud to name some of the benefits we’re providing like Modern Health for our team members and their families, Learning Budget, Unlimited PTO, Stocks and other programs that prove that we value and put our employees first at all times - (https://www.notion.so/people-Benefits-perks-1e48a5869c274f40910b76d405b92f63). We’re also working on building clear career paths for our team members’ progression and you can see an example of the Engineering career path (https://www.notion.so/people-Career-paths-blueprint-886e5de833c840a8bc267821f78fb650) available here. You’re absolutely right - Remote has grown incredibly fast in the last 12 months - we have hired, we have improved and we have scaled - and with all this we secured 2 funding rounds. This is not - by all means- an easy task. Growing at such rate requires a lot of ownership, flexibility, and ability to adjust to this ever-changing environment. The same goes for positions that are bound to evolve with time. One thing did not change and that is our mission and our values in all the work we put in for all employees, clients, and stakeholders. As mentioned above, we offer unlimited PTO so this in itself describes our priority to rest and recharge - no one at Remote is encouraged to work long hours, weekends, or outside their timezone. We also work asynchronous so this flexibility exists (Public Handbook for more information link - https://www.notion.so/Remote-Handbook-a3439c6ccaac4d5f8c7515c357345c11). We believe any situation outside this should be called out when it happens to your Manager or People team. In regards to our Leadership team, we believe that having Transparent conversations between C-level team members and the Employees is in fact ground-breaking. Here at Remote, we hugely believe in the importance of all the voices, even if they are conflicting, and this brings our Transparency value to a higher standard. If you would like to share your thoughts please feel free to reach out to our People team - even if you’re no longer an employee we always welcome feedback.
