Pros

Renaissance Learning has a solid benefits package.

Cons

The number of employees that have left the company over the past 5 years is staggering. These are mostly employees in the sales department and there are many to count (but I did recall over 70 individuals have left in the past 5 years). Because of poor management, executive VP’s focused only on employees that have met their goals, and very inconsistent compensation plans that change literally EVERY year, many, many good solid sales professionals have opted to leave the company. This is a shame. Really. Renaissance had a wonderful track record in their earlier years, but then the buyouts started and the company started to acquire more and more companies without recognizing the impact these acquisitions would have on employees. Sales folks are overwhelmed, and literally drowning with the expectation that they know, promote and SELL products that the company offers. How can employees be expected to understand and demo so many products – it’s impossible! I’d suggest unless you want only a 3 or 4-year career with Renaissance, you should look elsewhere for a job. You can do better.

New Applicants Beware

Business Outlook

Pros

Solid products, noble mission, decent pay

Cons

In my opinion, Renaissance is not the company it once was. It has cycled through investors for years and lost pieces of itself with every exchange. Senior leadership no longer values veteran employees and is disconnected from the reality of the K12 market. In my opinion, there is a lot of unqualified, undeserving and unfit middle management. Micromanagement is used because there is no trust. Favoritism is rampant and proper coaching is missing. Intimidation contaminates morale and creates a toxic work environment. Sales is bombarded with double- and triple-standards and picks up a lot of slack for other departments. In my opinion, honesty and hard work are undervalued---explanations are considered excuses, actions are over-assessed, and genuine effort is deemed insufficient. Sales performance recognition is upside-down---do your best and someone else will take credit for it, or get all the respect if you are assigned an affluent territory. In my opinion, applicant beware--underneath the facade of a mission to accelerate learning, you will find unethical policies, unrealistic goals and misguided priorities.
