Bad benefits, great work, great people

Pros

There is really interesting work to do, managers that give high-performing employees quite a bit of latitude and trust, and a culture very supportive of flexible work (time and location).

Cons

Well, benefits are average to crummy. Pay seems average across the industry for Anchorage - maybe a titch lower than some options, but also higher than others. Paid holidays are only 6 per year. Leave (total - combined sick and holiday) is 3 weeks for the first 3 years. Yes, the company is very flexible with leave without pay, but if standard sick leave is 2 weeks/year, that means effectively 1 week of vacation. Lastly, the employee share of medical costs recently doubled (for a single person, the lowest cost plan went from $86/mo to $170/mo). I know this is part of a larger issue of health care costs in this country, but wow nonetheless.

Pros

- Great work life balance. I never had to work more than 40 hours in a week and wasn't expected to be available outside of my normal shift. - Flexible working hours. It was always pretty easy to find time for stuff like doctors appointments or driving family. - Supportive managers/coworkers. Many of my coworkers were positive and supportive people who seem genuinely interested in your success. - Wide variety of projects to work on. The consulting nature of the job means that there are always options to change projects.

Cons

- Poor compensation and benefits. The compensation was in the bottom 10% of computer science majors. 401k match is 50% on every dollar but only up to a pretty dismal 3% of your salary. Some companies offer 50 cents on every dollar up to 6% and some offer a full dollar on every dollar up to 3%, but Resource Data has the worst of both worlds in this regard. Also the 401k plan only allows you to pick from a selection of index funds and you have to pay a $100 fee every year just for the privilege of picking how you invest your own money. Health insurance costs are truly unbelievable. I was paying nearly $550 a month to cover my family and that was before the cost increase that they recently announced. They don't offer any other compelling perks like gym membership, transportation reimbursement, or equity. Also paid company lunches were only offered once a week. - Slow paced and conservative work environment despite the small size. - Lackluster career advancement opportunities. No tuition reimbursement of any sort. No formalized employee growth plan system. No career development training unless required for your client. The mentorship system that is in place is more about helping you get your work done rather than helping you rapidly advance your career. - Company is kind of stuck in the past regarding work from home. The job is entirely doable from home and yet they refuse to make many positions fully remote. I worked from home almost the entire time I worked there and yet they still act like they want people to return to the office. - Bad clients. While many of the people at Resource Data are great, some clients can be really difficult to work with. Rather than having RDI manage all aspects of a project, you can end up contracted out to a project manager at another company who might have no clue what they're doing.

Pros

- Handhold on internal systems to get things going with a mentor system. - Some great people who work there. - HR group is helpful.

Cons

- Massive variance in quality of work and standards. - Style is completion over quality, even if the product is vulnerable. - Management encourages predatory work practices on younger employees.

Resource Data Response

We wish the former employee had a better experience with us. After internal review and without the ability to engage with the former employee, we have found no record of this or a similar complaint being brought to our attention. We have not been able to determine what is meant by "predatory work practices." We want an encouraging and supportive work environment for all employees. Our corporate culture does not condone something that could be described as predatory. While we may not be able to help this former employee, we hope any current employee experiencing something they consider inappropriate will bring it to our attention. - HR
