It's a cult

Pros

People are genuinely passionate and care about the products.

Cons

You have to drink the kool-aid and it's much more political than you'd expect. One Riot is an alleged value but teams operate in silos and are under-staffed and risk averse so they can't or won't team up to get things done. Leadership is becoming more out of touch with products. They keep hiring leaders who are from industries that don't understand games.

Pros

Compensation and work perks The actual product (the games) are great and I feel proud to be working for the company that makes League of Legends.

Cons

Crazy-making levels of bureaucracy, even in roles where you're not impacting anything player-facing. You can't do or try anything without leadership buy-in, no matter what discipline. If you and leadership are sympatico, great! If not, good luck. You need to either be a tech genius, have god-tier charisma, or have no mind of your own (or pretend that you don't) to do well here. From another review here: "A job where you’re never at peace not because you’re challenging yourself, but because the higher ups are forever trying to out-do each other" ^^^ This! A million times, this!

Once a decent studio, losing all its integrity now

Pros

-Great pay, above average in the industry - Good campus facilities - Plenty of amazing people to meet and learn from - Endless opportunities for fun experiences outside of work

Cons

- Management is very hierarchal despite their company values saying otherwise - More cliques and rude coworker behavior than expected - Too many managers who have no business managing people/don’t even want to manage - No job security, especially over the past year - R&D teams treated like separate studios from the core company, which means less resources and support - The company is pushing for genAI use in new splash artwork and other aspects of art for LoL and future projects. Look at their job board - Less resources given to new projects going forward - Most art is becoming outsourced to third parties - Losing its overall magic that attracted the best talent in the industry, hemorrhaging their best artists
