Pros

-Stable employment - no one gets fired. If you get fired it's because you probably don't really know what you're doing OR a grant\some sort of funding ran out. -Good benefits - free gyms, pension is good, health packages aren't bad at all

Cons

- Inefficient, inefficient, inefficient and honestly Inefficient - The staff side is draining - I work as a project coordinator in one of the large schools here and it seems like everyone just sits here to collect a check. Why? Because everyone knows nothing ever changes. Rutgers likes to hire but doesn't like to terminate. Especially the higher up you get. No matter how blatantly inefficient someone is, they are likely to be given a pass.

Good for students

Pros

It's good for students because the schedule is set, so it is easy to make sure we can work, while still attending all of our classes.

Cons

Manager wasn't always understanding about how caught up in school work we could be, and could have a real attitude when people called out because they have exams and papers and projects all due within a weeks time. Furthermore, because there are so so so many workers, not everyone is trained the same, and that tends to upset customers.

Pros

I was a teaching assistant and graduate assistant for 5 years at Rutgers and it is a reasonable place to work if you like research.

Cons

It's a public university so funding became difficult after the financial crisis. It is difficult to try and do blue sky research when you are uncertain every semester whether you'll be funded or not.
