Pros

Intellectual freedom, generally nice people. A real community of learning, instruction, and research. Most students are reasonably high quality. Many excellent programs. AAUP (professor's union) protects our jobs and intellectual freedom.

Cons

Mind-numbing complexity, RUScrew, still clinging to in-person instruction. Chronic staffing problems in the ORSP and DGCA offices hamper ability to obtain and manage grant funding. As at any large university, money talks, and if you aren't bringing in enough grant funding, you cannot get anyone to listen to your ideas or get promoted. As the flip side to the AAUP, the staffing unions have rigid word rules and make it difficult to hire qualified people and fire those who are underperforming.

Pros

Decent benefits like tuition remission, and PTO. It takes a really long time to accrue PTO.

Cons

Management lacks humanity and is severely racist, sexist, and ableist. They give preferential treatment to white workers. This job affects your mental health to the point that it affects your physical health. Under the guise of "professionalism" they will berate you and target you. It feels like a curse to work here. If we did not have such brainless management, the work would be tolerable. But they overwork, underpay you, and then ask you to have a growth mindset and do more than what is in your job description. They want you to be satisfied with crumbs. They say they have an open door policy, but once you speak up, you are under scrutiny and targeted.
