Fun but Tedious

Pros

Freedom to plan your own marketing strategy and work your own schedule. Fun building relationships with customers. The internal Ryder culture is professional and nice. They send all new hires to Miami for training and again every year or so. Commissions are uncapped so the earning potential is good if you do the work. Commission payout amounts are higher than those of competitor transportation companies. I loved the shop team, technicians and service managers. They are tenured and talented. There is real opportunities to get promoted into Lease sales. Stock options are good.

Cons

Higher commissions mean hire rates, so we often lose deals to our competition's cheaper rates. Rates are not negotiable, unless it's for a big deal. Success depends on having strong people at the rental counter, in the front of the line positions. There is a lot of turn over there and the new people make major mistakes that make your hard work obsolete. You're asked to mentor the counter representatives, but you have no authority over them. So they are often not held accountable when they make the same mistakes that cause you to lose a customer. When there are no counter reps due to promotion or turnover, you're responsible for working the counter for weeks, sometimes months. You are still required to log 300 - 350 marketing calls monthly, which depending on your manager, will be highly scrutinized and tracked on a daily basis. You also have to maintain an Excel workbook detailing all the deals you quoted that week. It is all very time consuming and will have you working early in the morning, late in the evenings, and weekends. Your note has to be in the system 48 hours prior to the customer activating their account or you will not get credit. There is a lot of suspicious caution surrounding the 48 hour rule and if a manager thinks you tried to play with the system regardless of your intentions, you can be terminated. The commission auditing process is becoming more and more scrutinized, meaning they are making it more difficult for you to get paid for your work. They have a 1-800 national line that customers call and national representatives will download reservations to duplicate accounts that may not already have your notes in place. So you lose credit for your work. Lastly, it's a very fast paced position. It's easy to get burnt out and jaded if you don't have support from your manager and rental counter representatives.

Pros

People are great! Team is always looking to improve and get better. High value on diversity and inclusion.

Cons

Sometimes Internal groups don't collaborate and cooperate as they should. Every team has it's own agenda, system, and method.. and expect everyone else to fit in that mold, sometimes including the customer.

Pros

Fast pace, great people, stable company

Cons

Lots of politics with management, employees, departments, old bandaged technology. It works, but you have to work too hard to keep it running.
