Pros

Working for the betterment of students education Very civic and social justice minded Opportunities for additional employment within the organization Site directors offer a great bridge to the higher levels of the organization and are so beneficial to the tutoring of students as their constant feedback encourages tutors to grow and continuously improve in their skills Organization sends out many informationals about opportunities that tutors can look into once their year is complete Organization hosts social events to let tutors know that they are in fact appreciated

Cons

Yes it is a service year but the salary is unrealistic for New York living where housing is not provided. Because we were placed at schools after moving to NY, many people lived over an hour (and rarely 2) from the schools in which they were placed. Pre-Americorps - not getting paid during school holidays and the very limited time off that was allotted presented a great strain on tutors and presented some challenges where tutors already had trips organized that were difficult to put off. A more thorough recruitment process needed to ensure we are getting the best of the bunch and tutors who will actually be committed - generally this is so but a few bad eggs do slip through the cracks

Pros

Making an impact in others lives. Engaging in groups to foster self improvement. Working for a better future. Great for retirees looking for side work or gap year students.

Cons

Job description is different than practicable expectations. Pay is far less than deserved. Unclear channel of communication between hierarchy. Student caseload and interaction with parents are trying. The skill among fellows skill among site directors differs radically. A major skill for a math fellow is the ability to think and perform mathematically.

Thank you for the feedback. We appreciate your feedback, and are grateful that you were able to make in impact in your students' lives. Also, that you found the opportunity to be of value for self-improvement and your future. We recognize this work and the workload can be very challenging especially if expectations are not clear. There is never a dull moment working in public schools, so while we make every attempt to describe the job details exactly, there are several changes that occur during the year that are beyond site control. We encourage applicants to connect with several current and/or alumni Fellows to get a better understanding of the day-to-day expectations. One of our priorities this year was to improve our lesson plans and training processses to ensure appropriate math skills are being developed. We recognize that math is a tough subject, not only for our students, but for our candidates who choose to dedicate a year to supporting them. We do our best to highlight in our promotional material and throughout the recruitment process expectations surrounding math ability and the support we can provide. Our hiring process includes a math assessment, and we've recently incorporated Site Directors into the process of screening tutorials to better identify math ability against how we can realistically support. We aim to provide coaching to candidates who are passionate about the work, but may need a bit of support. We are in the business to serve and help foster improvement for all.
