Benefits are good when not frozen by admin/ appropriations. Salary is less than private sector/ law firm but more than other agencies. The trade off was worth it for the guaranteed tour of duty (8.5 hours daily) and work-life-balance.

Cons

Salary and benefits subject to appropriations. Can make 50% more in private sector. Loss of work-life-balance, salary increases, and benefits (8% match is gone, FEHB keeps increasing, stipends gone) mean job no longer offers anything private sector doesn’t.
