Pros

Not many people think of insurance companies as a great place to work but SFM is a bit of a diamond in the rough. It's very employee-centric, emphasizes retaining staff, treating employees well and giving them the resources to do their jobs. SFM is big enough (and growing) that it offers great benefits but has the feel of a smaller company with a lot less red tape than larger competitors. Management is flat and they actually take time to get to know employees. The CEO and other executives are very approachable/personable. Prior to COVID-19, not many employees worked from home. They pulled off a herculean effort to move the majority of the workforce to remote work within a couple of weeks. They recognize that employees are productive and work well remotely, and are open to exploring options that keep most of us working from home post-COVID. I appreciate their openness to employee input in this regard. They are very deliberately and thoughtfully finding ways to ensure SFM's unique culture doesn’t suffer as a result. The benefits are phenomenal and rival bigger companies. Work/life balance is emphasized and taking time off is encouraged. They are very involved in the community and have found creative ways to keep efforts afloat despite COVID. They created a niche charity with the SFM Foundation and SFM staff volunteer their time to run it. Support of the Foundation runs deep and is near and dear to the heart of employees. There has been a lot of focus and momentum around diversity and inclusion, especially within the last year.

Cons

The flatness and size of the organization has a lot of positives, but does limit leadership opportunities. They do find and encourage growth opportunities in other ways. There's not as much diversity as there could be, but not for lack of trying. There is a lot of work being done to grow in this area.

SFM appreciates this feedback. Covid presented new challenges for our company, but everyone rose to the occasion. SFM's response is indicative of our culture in that we strive to be an employee centric organization while taking care of the needs of the business. SFM is continuing to explore new ways to provide professional growth for our employees as we expand into new states. HR Department

Pros

Emphasis on life/ work balance. Provides flexible schedules. Encourages and offers employees opportunities for professional development. Sincere desire to make injured workers have the best experience possible. Emphasizes open communication, team environment. Approachable leadership and executives. Relatively flat organization, not title heavy. Fun activities like yoga, disc golf, pickleball, other outings for employees to participate in. Provides and encourages charitable giving and philanthropic pursuits. Recent change to dress code, non customer facing now casual dress, though there is an expectation to dress appropriately according to your role. Culture is great! Participation in project work and committees creates leadership opportunities. Recognizes employees for service excellence.

Cons

For twin cities, most employees go into the office. Working from home positions not encouraged if you’re MN based. Employees tend to stay a long time and the management positions are not stacked, I don’t view this as a con, but some may view advancement opportunities as limited.
