Egyptian Slave Labor

Pros

Interesting Work - Loved the job Excellent trining program

Cons

Loved the work I was doing; but a miserable job experience. The corporate culture mimics the Egyptian slave labor system used for building the pyramids- work you till you drop, unhook your body, and hook up a fresh worker. Poor life balance- their corporate literature is great, but the reality does not resemble the ideals Schlumberger has on paper. Overwhelming work load, with no overtime allowed, forces you to "work off the books" with unbilled overtime. Many employees are no longer acruing vacation time, because they are maxed out, yet the work load won't permit time off. Great health benefits, but if you want to keep up with the workload, no time for doctor's appointments. Their literature repeatedly stresses the importance of health and life balance, but it's just not possible.

Pros

Excellent Benefits. High profile jobs, tons of responsibility, little office work, working with cool mechanical and hi-tech tools. You are heavily in charge and you have tons of support, therefore you will always know what to do or else you have the confidence and resources to ask if you are in doubt. It is a very solid working place.

Cons

A successful personal life seems unlikely to happen. The company becomes 90% of your LIFE. Planning time off is not reliable. Your boss will need you at any time on any day, often very unexpectedly. You are most of the time moving to one city to another (which can be exciting) but that means you spend lots of time in places where you know no one and you and your colleagues will be in the same situation. You should add this to the fact that you will have little time off. The end result is that you will spend most weekends with the same people you work with.... in my case I had cool colleagues, but it's not always the case.

Pros

Excellent training, all processes well-defined, you know what to do to get promoted, its all in your hands hard work, you can choose to continue on technical ladder or choose managerial and you will be on the same level no matter which one you choose. Wow, its indeed and excellent company. Ability to travel and work worldwide

Cons

Head count reduction when there is a downturn is very bad, the company is now known for this worldwide which is bad. Job security reduces employees morale ad they opt out whenever they can
