Great people to work around with. Corporate locates in bay area. Cares about employees well-being, provides on-site gym for corporate employees and their family.

Cons

May take a while to get you recognize, but depends on how much you're willing to prove yourself. Compensation may be on the low side compare to others.

Pros

Good job in a recession and very possible to work you way up to store manager level.

Cons

Safeway tends to promote people with little knowledge of retail operations in the stores. Most stores have a cliche or a personality driven cult built around the store manager and you have to be in the crowd to get good upward movement. Women mangers tend to strongly favor women and men mangers tend to favor men. Its is very hard work to work your way thru the ranks and the hours are poor. Mangers are constantly hounded by corporate continuously by people who tend to lack a good understanding of store operations. Goals are usually unrealistic and lack common sense.
