You can do better

Pros

Benefits package, anniversary trips, some great people, office locations, free food

Cons

Maybe all you want is a job and your (small) paycheck. Then SAGE is for you. If you're not looking to advance and you see endless overwork as job security, then SAGE is for you. If you think passive-aggressiveness and toxic office politics are professional and you don't expect your manager to support you because they have their own problems like perpetual meetings and looking good to other departments, then SAGE is for you. If being asked for your opinion only to have it ignored or to be told that the decision has already been made for you, then SAGE is for you. If you don't mind carrying dead weight coworkers and lots of inefficient processes, then SAGE is for you. If your idea of a healthy company culture is lower-level staff numbers getting smaller and worked to the bone while middle and upper management become more and more bloated, then again, SAGE is for you. From the No Cons reviews, some people have found their perfect fit, and I wish them well. For everyone else, you can do better. Money isn't everything, but even for publishing, most SAGE's salaries are low, especially for the locations their offices are in. They do not keep up with the cost of living. HR often passes the buck and leaves things to the discretion of individual managers, which means there is no consistency within or across departments for policies like telework. If you want to build a career, SAGE probably is not the place for you, because there are few chances to grow unless you are one of the favored few. It's demoralizing to always feel like you are replaceable, because that is the vibe SAGE sends out even though they say otherwise. It was really hard to leave, partly because I had started to feel like I wasn't worth anything to another company, but I took heart in remembering that no one I knew who'd left regretted it and wasn't happier now. As I am.

Extremely low pay

Pros

Some of the people are nice to work with, it depends on your department and your manager. The company is working toward a more open-floorplan workspace which should change things up a bit. Lenient with break/lunch times, if you're salaried you get to work from home one day a week but if you're hourly they don't trust you enough to let you do that, free lunch on Fridays which is nice of them but it sucks and absolutely no allergy friendly options. Great benefits plan.

Cons

Zero training/orientation, the only thing they cover in the quick and vague "new hire orientation" is the benefits, not even how to submit your time card. Pay is, as many other people here have stated, awful. Absolutely no room for negotiation, standard 3% merit increase each year to account for inflation rates... if you earn it. People are not paid fairly across the board. Inconsistent in every single sense of the word. They say there are standards like you have to reach a certain level to get this privilege or that benefit so you can't have it, but then you'll see countless people around you who are at your same level or under you and have the privileges and benefits you can't have because "its a company wide policy." No room to grow within the company, no career advancement opportunities, and not paid a living wage for the expensive area.

Pros

Benefits are extremely good. Privately held company (blessing and a curse). Multiple office locations, allow for some remote positions. If you can fit in with the cool kids then you probably will retire there. Several great and talented people from other HED companies that bring a reality of the market to an otherwise inwardly thinking management team. Aspirational company mission which falls short because managers are on over their heads.

Cons

Because company is privately owned, living in their own insulated world apart from the real competitive market they don’t understand their place in the HED space. They are growing very quickly with a management team that really has no idea of what they are doing. Currently their world is great because the are seeing very nice growth. This will only last for so long. Because of the inexperience of the management team they are trying to expand into markets they have no business being in. Consequently pressure is on mid to lower level employees to outperform at the cost of very top heavy management who inexperienced, a bit arrogant and while they won’t admit it, learning on the job. High turnover at mid to lower level positions will torment this company for years unless they figure out what they are doing and what they want. Culture between West and East coasts is noticeable. Additionally if you aren’t part of the “club” you won’t last, upper management seems to favor those who can play the game rather than those who add value, perform and who speak candidly- sometimes saying things Leadership doesn’t want to hear. Bottom line...if you have good “BS” game and can survive/excel without performing this is the place for you. Enjoy the benefits!
