Pros

Good health benefits, quiet work environment. Great if you LOVE academic publishing, but not if you want to advance your editorial skills.

Cons

In editorial department: -Low pay for what you do. Can't stress this enough. -No room for advancement in this department even if you work really hard and contribute significantly. -Raises might as well be nonexistent. Expect a 30 cent raise after working there for almost two years. -The yearly performance review is a scam. Even if you do your job extremely well and go above and beyond, management will find something miniscule to dock you on as to keep department costs low, yet they have no problem giving raises to upper management who don't do nearly as much work as lower level workers. If you ask for a raise that you truly deserve you will not get it; don't be shocked when your boss gets a promotion instead. -Workload is way too heavy for what the compensation is - pay attention to the job description because you'll be doing every single item listed plus more, especially as people leave or get fired and you find your workload doubling in size overnight. -Higher ups are not very friendly and wait until the last minute to micromanage so that deadlines are stressful and all the work is dumped on you to get done. Higher ups also act as if their work for you is the most important, when in reality it is 1/10th of what you have to process, yet you have to cater to certain people who are demanding and you don't really have a say. You have to accept all new tasks put on your plate without question. -Some of the clients are very difficult to work with and carry a sense of entitlement all too often, making your job that much harder. Again, the pay is not enough to compensate for what you have to deal with on a daily basis.

Looks Good on the Outside But a Mess on the Inside

Pros

Great company that is privately owned and sincerely cares about their employees.

Cons

Poor management with no sense of real leadership and can be spurious. The turn over in this company is so ridiculous. Overall, human resources needs to start over and hire real managers who know how to do their job. E-Books and Amazon.com will hinder the company's growth and their technology is not up to par with competitors.

Pros

Poised to grow in declining publishing industry

Cons

Management non responsive and unclear in requests. More than happy to blame underlings for their clear mistakes and misrepresentations.
