Sargent & Lundy - Look Elsewhere First

Pros

The benefits are respectable compared with other engineering firms. Flexible with time off.

Cons

If you see a job listing for Sargent & Lundy listed as a remote position, know it is to attract applicants to work in one of the offices. Although Sargent & Lundy has positions available online, know there are huge waves of hiring and layoffs, typically every 5 years. Many positions are in anticipation for work we may or may not receive at some point in the future. Office politics play a large role within the company. Although contributing opinions and ideas is encouraged, they are more often scoffed at rather than acknowledged and implemented. It also depends who presents it. Management pretends to be transparent, but it's very selective. If you ask intelligent questions it's like speaking with a political candidate - lies, smoke, redirects. Division managers are bipolar and closed-minded and typically treat staff as personal possessions, trading them like cattle rather than sharing within and outside of work groups or with other offices for the benefit of everyone. (One group or office is hiring while another is laying off.) Staff are required to train themselves in new software as it comes in rather than the company paying for software consulting and training. The company headquarters is located in downtown Chicago where people are victims of violence and theft daily.

Pros

I have been with S&L for over 15 years and have worked directly with literally hundreds of people across multiple office locations. I cannot say enough great things about this company. For me what has always had the most lasting impact is how employees here genuinely care about their work, their clients, and each other. Let’s start with the people. I have relationships with my coworkers that extend outside the office, which is what everyone should hope for in their job. You will meet people here with whom you’ll create lifetime relationships. These are people who will be at your weddings. At your baby showers. At your backyard summer parties. When you have achievements in your personal life, good and bad, you will have S&L people there with you. They will become a part of your life. On to the job. So many people have been here for decades. Decades! This isn’t a start-up. Do you want to learn and build an established and respected career? This is the place to be. If you need help, just turn around and someone is ready to help. And our employees are not merely performing work; they are speaking at international conferences to educate others about the work we perform. You will be working alongside those very people. You can easily become one of those people. Having been with the company for this long, it’s really fun to watch it happen. And let’s talk about the changes that are happening. Our CEO rules and our leadership team is capturing new work in so many new areas it’s unreal. Our industry is evolving, and S&L is quickly leveraging these changes to launch into directions in the power industry that are mindblowing: renewable energy, battery storage, plant security, national labs, data centers, WiFi networking … go have a look at the updates on our LinkedIn company page to see the extent of what we have going on these days. We have been firing up entirely new office locations and internal career opportunities are launching left and right. Finally, I want to get a plug in here for my friends in Chattanooga because more recently my career has gotten me directly involved with the folks in this office. Everyone I’ve met in Chattanooga has been awesome. I genuinely look forward to my visits (which are frequent). My role has allowed me exposure to see the genuine concern leadership has if an employee has an issue, and the desire to fix it. And the people at all levels are so fantastically FRIENDLY. I love it.

Cons

- If you are the type of person who likes to point out problems and not provide solutions, this isn’t the job for you. - We have been around for over 125 years because our clients expect quality. If you are unable to consistently produce quality, then you’re gonna have a hard time here. That’s the job.
