Pros

Large, privately held company with very strong culture and values. Integrity is of the highest regard if you want a long term career here. Has historically had a very personable, small company feel.

Cons

The company is growing very quickly, which is diminishing some of the culture that I have historically enjoyed. With the fast growth, operational support is often lacking, and senior management is becoming less connected with front line challenges. I hope that this will resolve itself soon, but the company has an aggressive growth strategy.

Pros

Pay can be good if you're willing to move anywhere but you may end up in North Dakota or Saudi Arabia. The annual meeting is a nice get away. Company paid for you and a guest. There are good smart people in this company but there are are also incompetent people who have a job because of who they know.

Cons

My biggest regret is spending so much of my career with Savage. Be keenly aware of last names at Savage. Not just the Savage name but some of the senior leaders. You'll find that they tend to hire family member. Lost of nepotism and croneyism going on. The easiest way to be promoted at Savage is to have the right last name. They preach a lot of values but when it come down to it the people don't believe. I was with the company for almost a decade in a professional position. I moved for them twice, worked weekends and even spend weeks in squalor (no running water, no electricity) in the field. When it came down to it, they "let me go" because of "something" I did five years previous (I had been promoted since). They were more concerned about the bottom line then treating their people right.

Pros

They treat their employees like family. Their benefits are amazing and their focus on safety is 1 st class. The training structure is also very well thought out and taught.

Cons

Each operation is its own unit. Nowhere for employees to vent frustrations to without being susceptible to retaliation. Operational politics.
