Inefficient product development and abusive environment

Pros

Worked with creative colleagues and industry leaders.

Cons

Never was given time to work on developing product. Needed to spend majority of time preparing a polished, 3-hour presentation to management every week describing what we wanted to do. Ideas never good enough. Could not tell management ideas ahead of time to see if they thought they were worth exploring. Always had to provide very detailed, time-consuming presentations, only to have them thrown out. No input given about what was liked (if anything) or direction to try. Verbally abusive environment. At one company-wide meeting, top educators and educational leaders were INVITED to attend to participate on a panel to help educate employees on trends and issues in education. The CEO commented that for about $100 a student, these educators could be providing their students the company's great products. One of the panelists commented that the school's cost for the technology product required the purchase of computers, people to maintain the computers, different scheduling which would require more teachers, etc., so the cost was more than $100 per student. The CEO and President of Education (who popped out of the audience and walked to the stage) proceeded to verbally attack members of the invited panel about their comments!! I never saw anything like it. And then some members of the audience started cheering the CEO and President on. I have never been more embarrassed to be a part of an organization in my entire life. I have never have worked in such an unprofessional, stressful environment.

Pros

My colleagues, summers off (although the amount of time off has shrunk over time), and several of my customers were great to talk with throughout the day - laughing, brainstorming, answering their questions. It feels nice to be helpful.

Cons

The work environment is so stressful. Big brother is definitely watching. Upper management doesn't feel that the sales consultants are overworked, yet they truly are. They see any suggestion as a complaint. They don't want to hear your ideas. The environment is that of a factory worker from the 1950's. But management clearly has their favorites. If you're not a favorite you are ignored. If your not at quota they get annoyed rather than trying to help or understand what the issue is. They are so cookie cutter and by the book - they don't understand that each territory has it's own unique challenges. Everything is about cost control yet their processes and ideas are so antiquated. The warehouse/production is most in control which means that the sales consultants usually have to let the customers down in some way which was very challenging. The morale was always subpar. It's not unusual to see someone in the office crying and/or very upset.

Pros

Great people. Great benefits. Good family/work balance. One of my most favorite jobs.

Cons

Inexpicable behavior on part of upper management. After winning an award for the best performance of the year, increasing my business by 40%, more than double of the next highest performing employee, management decides to send people from the home office to monitor my work process. While there, these people spent all day making dates for drinks after work, etc.....I never did get why this was so. I found a higher paying job with their competitor.
