Pros
Great benefits. Enjoyment of job depends on specific manager and Department. It is beneficial to know someone on the inside before you decide to work there. Make sure you are getting into a Department with a good Leader. Nice patients in a beach community. I really enjoyed the great care and patient ratios when I started at Scripps. It isn't the same. See Cons. They offer part-time employment. They have been said to be good employer to workers over age 50 and working moms. Each year they give employees a survey where we review Leadership, our Managers and Scripps. I appreciate that and they seem to listen and sometimes make changes.
Cons
Unfortunately, over the past couple of years, I have seen deteriorating situation for nurses. Scripps lost money and it is trickling down. Heavy patient loads to the point nurse are report them for safety issues. Watching the clock and your time cards to the point that it is just easier to punch out and finish work, rather than be counseled on "time-management" after you have been pushed to the limit with heavy, patient assignments. There is no Union representation, which many nurses don't want, so I thought, too, but you are not protected. GO ELSEWHERE. If you are starting your career, go where you can have a long career with protection and great retirement in the end. Go to work for a profitable hospital. I would go to UCSD, Kaiser or in the Military, where your voice is represented. Benefit and retirement packages are the absolute best and you may be able to retire early. Profitable hospitals don't have such a high incentive to squeeze every ounce of work out of you. This could change in the future, if Scripps gets back on financial footing. If you pick a career at Scripps, make sure you are using it as a step along the ladder. At anytime, your manager or Leadership can change and it can be a different situation.
