A generalist's playground

Pros

SOE brings opportunities to work on projects that match your interests and passions, which can be a very rare thing to find in an engineering field without starting your own company. The variety of work is a dream for a generalist, you can work in all the disciplines you enjoy. People are very transparent and personable, and there is a good balance between an overtly ridid structure and a completely flat company. I've found it's always possible to talk to the people you have questions for, and many are very receptive to new ideas. Company culture encourages learning, not overdoing it/burning out, and getting things done by working smart and leaning on each other. The office tries to support a reduced stress environment, meals are provided, there is a quiet room, and an open pet policy.

Cons

It's got small company structure but has grown to be medium sized too quickly - internal processes are still in flux and thus you may not settle into one way of doing things (this is changing, albeit slowly). Some projects are much more demanding than others and it can be easy to feel pressured to work late, even if that pressure is mainly internalized. They generally run a lean operating budget, while there are perks the office and amenities there are utilitarian. There could be more opportunities to learn and research in idle time, but the structure isn't there to support it. The office is in an office park which is car-centric and not very fun to exist in. some food is walkable but across big roads w/ lots of car traffic.

Pros

Constantly learning in new fields. Get to work on analog design, power electronics, digital systems, and board layout, and spend most of my day working on new designs and schematics. There are many opportunities to work in upcoming fields and physics-y / white paper programs, particularly in renewable energy and medical devices. Learning is strongly encouraged and senior engineers make themselves available to mentor and guide new hires. Benefits are strong - unlimited PTO, free lunch and dinner, health/dental, and 401(k) match. It's a great place to work. Leadership has an open door policy, with open office hours for anyone who wants to talk publicly/privately

Cons

Not necessarily a con, but SOE is a growing company in two locations (Redmond WA and El Segundo CA). We are naturally outgrowing our systems due to rapid hiring. Everything from engineering processes, HR, IT, food planning, will be changing. It's very important for new hires to stay flexible and open minded, and voice challenges to leadership to plan ahead

Pros

- Plenty of learning opportunities in areas within and outside of your role - Very supportive leadership - A passionate, high energy team - Fun company celebrations - A lot of cool projects going on - Pet friendly office! The office dogs are amazing

Cons

There can be a bit of a learning curve if you are coming in without some knowledge of electronics. The good thing is, you are not required to come in with this knowledge (for ops roles) and they dedicate a lot of time to make sure you are able to learn at a good pace. Everyone here is a great teacher and is always willing to mentor! The team is constantly updating and creating training materials for new employees, so there will be more and more resources available over time as well.
