Pros

There are not a lot of positives with Selective Insurance

Cons

Toxic work environment, managers that have no clue what they are doing. There's a level of Micromanagement that occurs if you challenge anything out of the norm. Its your typical 1970's insurance company, no diversity, no diversity in thought. I had a couple of incidents with a toxic, power hungry manager that treated me different than other employees. I went to HR and they were dismissive and non-existent. Often your HR rep would change sometimes monthly, so there was really no support from HR. I went to Senior Leadership with my issues about being treated differently and Senior Leadership basically told me to be quiet. This company truly is awful, its like working in a prison.

Horrible, Toxic Working Environment

Pros

One of the only major companies (outside of Thorlabs) to work for in Newton, New Jersey that pays okay and has benefits.

Cons

Never have I worked somewhere where you constantly have to look over your shoulder and walk on eggshells. The people who thrive here are brown-nosing sycophants, who look for any opportunity to throw someone under the bus to make themselves look better. I can't speak for all departments, but the flood insurance department was terrible to work in. Training is not very thorough and they throw you into the fire and then get upset when you don't excel immediately. Management does not trust anyone to do their job and it's obvious with the sheer amount of micromanaging they do. They even time your bathroom breaks and lunch breaks to make sure you aren't stealing company time. Additionally, I witnessed two coworkers of mine being bullied by the manager of the division, who is incredibly short-tempered and unprofessional--many conversations were had with HR and somehow this person is STILL in the flood department. This manager also became angry and took it personally when another individual gave notice due to the toxic work environment and the manager proceeded to tell this person "good luck working at Walmart then". Additionally, one of my friends who works remotely for Selective was reported by a coworker for having her baby in the background of a video meeting. That is truly despicable behavior, especially when my friend has excelled in her role for many years. Overall, unless you are literally about to be homeless, I would not recommend working here. There are many insurance companies that offer remote roles these days.
