Pros

Selective has very good products, knowledgeable people, a good agency plant and many long-term employees. The bonus plans make total compensation rewarding, but the goals are very difficult to meet. Without the bonus, if you are in a production role, the financial reward for the hours/effort that must be expended is not in balance with the requirements of the position. Flexible working environment (ability to work remotely) is a major plus, but can also be a deterrent from feeling connected to others in the company and to knowing what is going on in the company in general.

Cons

Selective has extremely high work loads and goals for production with a large amount of home office oversight/personnel, report writing and little technical support and administrative help. The amount of data is overwhelming, difficult to find and to interpret. Communication from home office to field is poor at times. Many managers have been with company for many years (and with Selective only) and are not open to thinking that there may be a alternate and/or better ways to do things and they are not very inclusive to outsiders who are not long-term Selective employees.

Could be better

Pros

Great salary, work from home opportunity, very friendly co-workers, decent benefits, opportunity for growth within the company, excellent training program, lots of jurisdictional training.

Cons

Upper management loves to micromanage their employees, there are a ton of meetings that take up time, unrealistic expectations on claim loads, the staff is very overworked and under appreciated, they are rewarded for the work they can do by being put on performance plans, work life balance is non-existent.

Great benefits, unreasonable work load

Pros

Benefits are way above average -8.5% 401k contribution, nice annual bonus etc. Coworkers are wonderful for the most part.

Cons

Workload was crazy - more like a 60-70 hour week than a 40 hour. Part of the problem was corporate management kept coming up with new (and largely unnecessary) job duties without taking any away.

It's nice to see that, despite the workload, you're still willing to give a 5-star rating. We'll pass along the feedback.

Pros

Pay and bonus is good, free parking, and flexible work schedule.

Cons

Work load is to large for small staff, causing priorities to be change daily and long hours. Application development done offshore is not reviewed by Selective IT employees. QA is also done offshore, so only acceptance testing is done by Selective employees which often is too late to be fixed before code goes into production. Top heavy with management that are out of touch with application developers. Newly hired managers are unqualified and don't bring much needed outside perspective. There is very little job growth, and training is rarely approved. IT application development staff has decreased even though number of managers has increased.

Unreasonable work load and micro-management

Pros

Work from home option pay is good excellent 401k match

Cons

The work load is ridiculous. The pending here is smaller than other companies, but you will be micro-managed so much and have so many technology problems that it will be impossible to do your job in a reasonable amount of time. The claim system is antiquated and the phone system is a mess. Every day there is a new problem. Working here is like being in an abusive relationship. You are constantly made to feel like a failure that you start to believe it. Managers gaslight you into thinking there is something wrong with you. They ask you what's wrong with you and you can't answer because you have no idea what they're talking about. One day you are complimented on how well you're doing, the next you are put on a performance plan. It's absurd. Also, managers way over-step their involvement in claims, and their behavior is sometimes unethical. They will change liability decisions and tell you to deny a claim we clearly owe, all because the insured or their agent is a big client. "Make them prove it in arb" is something I have been told on more than one occasion. We've also been told not to pay a claimant more than a certain amount on a claim so the insured won't experience a surcharge, even if we owe it. They will tell the claimant the insured is going to pay the rest, but we have no control over whether or not they actually do it.

Pros

There is generally a feeling of flexibility regarding work hours and working from home. The office location is also ideal for anyone that lives in Sussex or Morris County NJ.

Cons

Long hours, work load is too much for the size of the staff, Cost cutting initiatives resulted in outsourcing (offshore) and a reduction of long term staff.
