Pros
Great coworkers, especially on nights, with excellent teamwork Good charge nurses Normally enough medical resources, sometimes have to call other units for supplies Culture of safety, and nurses are not reprimanded for minor medication errors, falls, hospital acquired infections and skin injuries Self-scheduling in most units Part-time and full-time employees get full benefits
Cons
"company focus" on safer nurse to patient ratios, but staffing will put nurses and techs on-call for their regular scheduled shifts (I lost four weeks of pay this summer to being on-call) Nighttime hospitalists do not assess patients unless there is an emergency Nighttime specialistsa get annoyed when you page them for patient concerns Raises are $1-2/year, company does not keep up with market rates Getting cross trained in other units such as ICU and ED is not possible Medical insurance is not good quality (HMO and POS plans only) Providers not good at clarifying code status with patients and qoly expectations for patients that survive a code
