Pros

Great Customer service. Beautiful working environments. Exceptional nurse executives who promote dedicated and hardworking nurses from within. If you are a nurse- and want to move to leadership- or move into other opportunities this is your company. Lots of RN growth here!!! Great tuition reimbursement.

Cons

If you are not an RN and did not graduate from VCU or other costly and prestigious MBA/ MHA /MS program you can forget about being promoted to leadership from within. Any opportunities for non- RN leadership positions are given to outside interns with no clinical/ hospital experience. Those positions are frequently given to the - close family friends- children of current or retired C- suite leaders or MDs. Sentara needs to work more to promote from within. Significant review of job descriptions also needs to be done to open up opportunities to Non-RNs. If you have a clinical background outside of RN and the job does not require you to perform bedside nursing tasks- then stop requiring RN / BSN. You are missing dedicated and educated clinically experienced non-RN ( MHA/ MBA/ MS) candidates. Ancillary advancement track is so limited: TC-Mgr and a very few Director positions within Ancillary, which are normally granted to non- clinical VCU graduates. Those that do get to TC or MGR never leave cause there is no where else to grow to beyond those 2 positions, no other new / different positions to even laterally transfer into.
