Decent to start, but little long term potential in higher roles.

Pros

401(k) match at 100% up to 6% is great. Golf discount is excellent. Company has large community profile. Company has a nice Christmas party, summer picnic, and is fairly generous in the community. Stable company.

Cons

Human resources should pretty much be relabeled "management resources." Constant management restructuring that leads to power struggles between directors. Retiree positions and directors often come from outside the company, leaving little room for professionals to move up. Non-union workforce with union mentality. Pay is never "negotiated." It is based on salary bands that you automatically start at the bottom and work your way up. Raises not guaranteed. You are expected to "pay your dues" for years. Older workforce will lead to an information gap eventually. Since the defined benefit pension was eliminated and there is no mandatory vesting for the 401(k), there is no incentive for long term tenure. Many of the younger people are getting disillusioned and leaving for better opportunities. The Life & Health area is struggling, except for pensions. After firing all of the captive agents in Consumer Products, they haven't developed a legitimate sales system. Only life products they sell are an overpriced term product and a poor whole life product. Health plan is terrible. You might as well not even have insurance. High employee contributions + medium deductible = bad policy.

Pros

Vacation plan was exceptional New CEO appears to be utilizing the aircraft more

Cons

Poorly managed flight department did not encourage use of corporate aircraft using a cost/price structure that made it's use unfavorable for most company departments. Young manager (micromanager) has shown extreme discrimination towards older employees. Beware, if you've been previously employed by a competitor they (management) will hold it against you. No raise in three years of employment. Not a friendly environment By far, the worst employer I have ever had, which is sad, it could be such a great place to work!

Pros

- Large multi-year legacy replacement projects underway for both Commercial Lines and Personal Lines systems - Potential for growth opportunities after 5-8 years (unless retirements occur earlier)

Cons

- Slow painful grind to move beyond your first promotion ( can be upwards of 8 years) unless you are lucky/skilled enough to ride some ones coat-tails. - Majority of management is young and will be with the company for a number of years until they can either Jove up or retirements open positions for them or they get sick of waiting and just leave - Most positions vacated by retirements are not restaffed - Upper management places a lot of stock in the community, meaning they know you don't have options elsewhere in central Wisconsin, so they don't think disgruntled/disillusioned folks are likely to leave - Career advancement appears to be on 5-8 year cycles and only and handful occur if you are lucky
