Pros
Friendly coworkers and managers -- almost everyone at my store had been there for awhile, so it was like being part of one somewhat-big sometimes dysfunctional family. My department probably had the least amount of turnover. That alone nearly made up for everything else.
Cons
Little to no opportunity for advancement. If you make the lower management tier (assistant dept. manager, dept. manager), it's for certain upper management has already pegged you as promotable/not promotable to another position without you realizing it. If you're in the latter category, you're stuck, no matter how many times you apply for a particular position. It makes for a lot of disgruntled employees.
