      Pros

      I am fortunate that the "Agent" I work for takes good care of me and values me. I enjoy taking care of my customers.

      Cons

      Required to sign documents for Corporate home office for a company I'm not legally employed by. ( I question the legality of this) The Agent I work for is a 1099 Employee of Shelter, and I am his employee. There is ZERO benefit to becoming and affiliate with this company. Unless you consider them trying to lock you into compete clauses a benefit. Don't do it. Do not take the affiliate classes. It does not benefit you and you will most assuredly not take over an existing office.

      Affiliate Agents with are not employees of Shelter Insurance but rather employed by the principal Shelter Agent who is an independent contractor. The Affiliate Agent program and status are not required by the Company in any way and are only offered when requested by the principal Shelter Agent. After completing the same training as a principal Agent, the program does recognize the status of the employee as an Affiliate Agent. In addition, Affiliate Agent status affords the opportunity for them to qualify for incentive travel with the Agent’s approval. Shelter is proud of the large percentage of Affiliate Agents who go on to be principal Shelter Agents, but for a number of reasons this may not be the direction in every situation. The Affiliate Agent program has been in existence for almost 20 years and has been a wonderful resource for helping Shelter grow it’s Agency force.

      Pros

      Coming from a couple other companies, working at Shelter was a breath of fresh air. The executives genuinely care and take interest in their employees, and the work setting is very collaborative.
