Pushing toward excellence

Pros

While RIC has earned its reputation as a place that expects a lot of its employees, I believe it does so only in the interest of truly being the "best" for its patients. The culture of RIC is truly aspiring to excellence in all we do. That type of culture definitely requires a lot of dedication from its employees, but I find it inspiring to work somewhere that I truly believe wants to continually move forward and become better. The staff overall are hardworking, bright, and invested in our patients. Because it is such a large organization, there are many opportunities for lateral movement, diversity in departments and patient populations, and ways to expand your skill set. Upward movement is also definitely possible, but there is high competition for those roles due to a very bright, eager, dedicated pool of staff from which to choose.

Cons

It is a multi-layered organization, and so to impact change, it can be tough to get the right approval to move something forward. I do believe that many processes have become so complicated that they are difficult for staff to sustain, and therefore changes don't always stick.

Pros

Cutting edge rehabilitation techniques; diverse and challenging patient population; excellent continuing education and collaboration possibilities; plans for growth (new hospital)

Cons

Over-emphasis on assessment, cutting into valued treatment time for patients; disconnect between leadership and front line employees; tendency to attract highly strung uber type A employees; strong emphasis on productivity with extremely little time allotted for meetings and inservices

A really exciting time for RIC

Pros

RIC is an innovative and inspiring place to work. It's a privilege to be part of an institution that literally makes miracles possible every day. Dr. Smith's vision is bold and unique, and it's really special to be part of RIC during this time as we prepare to move into the new hospital in 2017.

Cons

The current hospital was not built to facilitate the levels of collaboration needed between clinical, research and administrative staff. But I'm hopeful the new hospital will change this in a radical way (when we're all going to be sitting and working together, side by side).
