Pros

The bare minimum, as in the checks cash.

Cons

This company is a slave to the share holder. Skilled labor means nothing. There is no reward for learning new skills because there is no tier system. Guys that can barely change oil are now making more than guys that can rebuild and program the machines. The retirement is a joke and the insurance is raising. There is no advancement either since the company only cares about brute forcing the product out the door without any thought of the future.

Pros

Good Pay. Lots of overtime if you want it.

Cons

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE KENOSHA FACILITY: Upper management are clearly in over their heads and don't practice what they preach. HR person is the worst I have ever experienced and is a core problem with this facility. Overall company culture is terrible. Deceptive hiring practices. Warehouse/forklift positions are seasonal but they won't tell you that up front. When business slows down (which happens quite often) you will be sent to the production department to do jobs you never agreed to do, weren't trained for, unsafe and/or above your pay grade. You may also be forced to work mandatory overtime and weekends. Benefits are not competitive with what most companies are offering these days. You get 2 weeks of vacation with zero sick days, that's it. If you get sick or life happens and you can't report to work there is no way to avoid getting attendance points and you only get 9 of them which don't fall off your record for an entire year. This is unsustainable for most people. The entire system at Silgan seems geared to set their employees up for failure. Silgan's 401k is subpar and deceptive. In their hiring ads they claim a 6% match but this is only true for salaried employees. Hourly employees have to put in 6% just to get a 3% match and to add insult to injury their contributions aren't fully vested for 5 years, meaning that if you were to quit or get fired (a high probability at this company) within that time span they will take their contributions back. I could go on and on but there isn't room enough here for me to list everything negative about Silgan Containers. Do your mind and body a favor and avoid this company like the plague!

An OK place to work

Pros

- Lots of overtime opportunity if you are hourly - Union based so you do get some protections there - Pretty much all the supervisors are cool and easy going, as long as you do your job and work on the stuff that occurs throughout the day, they don't bother you - 4 days on, 4 days off 12 hour shifts (13+ as a supervisor) - 401k matching - some of the very bad apple managers have left so bit better that way, but not perfect

Cons

- there is a reason for the union, management will abuse the workers, you get 4 days on and off, but you can get forced 2 if there not volunteers - overtime goes by seniority first, then by least overtime hours worked so however did the least overtime gets forced if there are no volunteers - coworkers seem to screw each other more over when it comes to overtime scheduling more than management does - supervisors are not management, remember that, they get treated as pure garbage by the managers, there are supposed to be 9 supervisors, only 6 when I left, over 100% turnover annually for them. With that in mind, the ones currently here do good to not to take it out on the employees - health insurance is expensive, it's over $400 for just you and spouse and its a $1,000 deductible for even a check up.... sick? Get ready to pay the full $250+ for the check up - only 1 week of vacation for the first 3 years of you are hourly - if you are a supervisor, good luck with taking the 3 weeks of vacation you get, because you are expected to cover your co workers shift if they go on vacation or call out....refuse to work the 12 days in a row 13+ hour shifts, even for just 1 day off? Enjoy your 1 week unpaid suspension because you aren't showing commitment and or having to have your weekend ruined because management suspended the other supervisor and now you have to cover their shift and then that suspended supervisor resigns a few weeks later - Edison specifically underperforms for the company, so there is consistent pressure on the place to succeed - your training will be a few videos...maybe you get lucky and are paired with someone who will actually attempt to train you but management(not, not the supervisors) has no problems having you run the machines on your 2nd day with no training. - quality department is your hidden boss, the quality analysts have more influence than the supervisors and can easily get you and the supervisors in trouble so if quality says do something then go do it, on the other note, if you do and get on their good side, it makes things so much easier for you - if you are a supervisor or above and plan to resign, don't even put 2 weeks notice, you will be walked out the moment you hand it in, so just resign same day - supervisors also get no training, and get ripped for not knowing things despite that - everything always breaks, even stuff that was fixed just weeks ago and still break, best way to describe this place would be they ran for years and years without doing any basic maintenance and that damaged the machines beyond the point of no return so now it's just constant bandaging fixing. - no good part inventory control
