Pros

The talent here is truly world-class. Every employee -- from engineering to the business side -- is capable of building amazing things and with any company they wish. Employees come from schools like MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Melon, and Cal and haved worked with companies like Facebook, Google, and Oracle. With all that said, they somehow all chose to congregate here. You definitely never feel like the smartest person in the room. The culture is very loose and you'll always find people having casual conversations over ping pong or Philz Coffee. However, being a start-up, the environment is extremely motivated to get stuff done. The product is revolutionary and is the best in its class. They're working on some really cool stuff here. Given the nature of the product, everyone is expected to be technically-oriented to an extremely high-level. However, this does come with rewards as every division seems to be outperforming those in similar companies.

Cons

At this stage of the company, there doesn't seem to be enough bandwidth for training or support. Mentorship is hardly existent and people are expected to pick everything up on their own. Very unstructured. Rarely opportunities to work on projects outside of your focus. Most people are overloaded with projects.

Pros

Haven't been employed here for a full year yet but the experience thus far has been positive. - Mgmt is open to employee feedback and doing what they can to make suggested changes - At the current size of the organization, there is a good balance of having some structure but not too much process - Compensation and benefits are at or slightly above market - High standard for talent - hire highly capable and intelligent people - Emphasis on nurturing and maintaining a collaborative team environment - Employees are encouraged to be autonomous - no micro-mgmt. - Encouragement of continuous learning and growing; taking on more responsibility - Daily catered lunches and dinners; lots of snacks and beverages - you will never be hungry here - Impressive product that will one day make MemSQL a globally recognized brand and company

Cons

Like any other start-up, there are areas for improvement. Most of the challenges naturally just come with scaling an organization, and some are more basic. - The Company is very engineering focused which is understandable at times, but when decisions are made, it should be made with the best interest of everyone and not just the engineers - The majority of the talent is young, and for most, MemSQL is their first real job. With that, there is sometimes an obvious lack of professional etiquette - be on time to meetings, and if you're going to be late, let someone know; accepting and declining meeting requests; understanding work & communication flow
