Great product, poor management

Pros

Amazing product, great people, and open to new ideas and ways of doing things.

Cons

Quiet firing. Management doesn’t know how to effectively lead people. Instead of discussing ideas and finding solutions they rather “miss” cadence calls for months, and push you to quit by limiting your resources.

Pros

I’ve been at MemSQL for a few years and can confidently say we are in the best position we ever have been to be incredibly successful. The company is currently in that perfect mid-size start-up place where there is a super solid foundation but still a lot of exciting growth ahead. The market opportunity is huge, the product is impressive, customers are loving it and expanding their contracts every year, teams are still lean so the impact is high, and we are growing. I foresee exponential growth in both revenue and headcount year over year and a bright future ahead! There are few opportunities to work at startups like MemSQL. Here there is a maniacal focus on building a strong, well managed, and operationally efficient business that still maintains the innovation obsession you expect in a startup culture. We operate with a level of maturity as a startup because we are truly building an enterprise business to support other enterprise businesses. This has been especially true and valuable over the past few months navigating COVID-19, I feel grateful to work at a healthy company that is stable, financially secure, and fairly insulated from the greater economic impacts of coronavirus. Most importantly there are some of the smartest and most driven people I’ve ever worked with on the team here. Everyone is highly motivated to take this company and our technology to new heights. It’s incredibly inspiring to work with such incredible people who push themselves and those around them to constantly grow.

Cons

We’re moving really quickly and sometimes that can lead to a lot of challenges in scaling a business… One area is in communication breakdowns. Communications have improved but could still stand to be better across the organization. Second, it’s great that we are a high performance-driven company but sometimes there are unrealistic expectations and not mutual accountability from the company in setting people up for success in hitting/exceeding expectations. You have to be a very self sufficient person to succeed here.

Pros

My journey at MemSQL hasn't been an easy one. Within the first 3 months, the entire senior leadership changed, a new CEO at the helm with a new senior leadership team. I truly didn't know where I stood. Fast forward 10 months, I've never seen such a drastic change in a company for the positive in such a short period of time. We focused on the key elements of the business and the results have been phenomenal: *Hired strong/proven sales leaders. This is probably the 2nd time in my career where I've worked with Sales leaders who truly lead by example. They don't lead by fear rather by accountability and facts. *The management team focused on frivolous spending and put emphasis towards where the actual needs are *We put a huge focus on diversity hires. It's just not a company tagline; memSQL is investing time and energy on training the management team. *Cudos to HR/ E-team, providing transparency across the organization has been a big change. Every voice is heard and questions are answered in the all-hands calls. Employees are allowed to ask questions anonymously and they are answered by our CEOs. This really allowed employees to speak their minds during this challenging time and get answers. *Growth in sales has been tremendous over the last 3 quarters. The exec team made a huge investment in the leadership roles and it’s paying off.

Cons

memSQL has come a long way over the last 12 months, and well on its way to establishing itself as a leader in the space. With such a fast pace of growth, it comes with sacrifices. These are not necessarily Cons rather cost to be #1 *Worklife balance *Everything is a priority and needs to be completed yesterday *More focus on sales and product hires. Supporting functions needs to scale with a growing team and added responsibilities
