Pros

The people are lovely, great working hours (depending on your team), great benefits

Cons

It's baffling this is a project management company. Our own use of the product is horrible and confusing. The internal project management is abysmal, especially since everything is being moved to international teams who don't have the proper experience or motivation. Internal projects get stuck in loops of reviews and everything is last minute and urgent for some reason.

Pros

At Smartsheet, my tenure as a Senior Principal Software Engineer has been nothing short of enriching. The leadership, led by CEO Mark Mader, is commendable across the board. The C-suite, embodying the same empowering and authentic values, are not only competent but exceptional in their roles. They listen actively, respond with ownership, and drive the company with a clear and innovative vision. The company's embrace of the T-shaped professional concept allows for incredible flexibility and autonomy, ensuring that we are well-rounded and not confined to narrow roles. This is complemented by the supportive and collaborative nature of my peers, making every challenge a team effort and every success a shared joy. The unique structure where many teams operate almost as independent startups provides a dynamic and exhilarating work environment, enhancing personal growth and alignment with our individual career trajectories.

Cons

Despite the many positives, there are areas for improvement. Certain pockets within the organization exhibit a lack of engagement, which can impact team dynamics and overall productivity. It's crucial for management to not only consider knowledge and skills during the hiring process but also how potential hires fit into the team culture and exhibit high agency. While the startup-esque team operation is a huge perk, it requires a careful balance and coordination to ensure consistency and efficiency across the board. Encouraging and structuring more opportunities for taking calculated risks can foster a more vibrant startup culture, promoting innovation and agility.
