Pros

I have been with SoCalGas for many years. When I came into the company, they actually cared for their employees. Now not so much. It's all about the bottom line. Part of the problem is Sr. Management is heavily influenced by Sempra which is SCG parent company and they set most of the policies. They are working employees now harder than ever, they have taken away so many critical perks, and the salaries are not that competitive. We do have an incentive but every year the senior management puts on a fire drill and employees start the gossip mill that we will not get one. And, since it is not guaranteed, it can happen. However, when people come into the company, they heavily publicize it as a selling point since the salaries again are not competitive. We do have cash balance which is similar to a pension and the benefits are okay. Not the best, but okay. Just know what you are getting into. They are particularly working engineers to death since they are knee deep in a lot of stuff now and not enough overhead. And their priority is maximizing profits for shareholders and not employee wellness and retention. It's deeply troubled me seeing how this company has turned itself from a caring balanced family company into a greedy Corporate bueuracratic sweat shop.

Cons

Workloads. Bad management in parts; you never know with constant restructuring if you will get a bad boss who will make your life hell.

Pros

Great team, collaborative, casual and professional atmosphere, raises, bonus at end of year, telecommute, management and professional development trainings, 401k, great benefits, learning workshops that include free lunches, and work flexibility. Company loves to hire by referral especially if it's friends and family, but make sure the current employee is in good standing and has a good reputation.

Cons

You might get a bad boss here or there, but you can apply to another or transfer. They only offer tuition reimbursement if you are currently taking classes, not after you graduate. Director positions can be based on seniority (years of service) and usually promoted within the company. Tons of Manager titles-positions, not enough movement to Sr Manager and very limited Directors positions.
