Game changer offering excitement and growth

Pros

We're changing the finance game. Working here you get as much on-field time as you can handle, and will be surrounded by a smart and collaborative team. Being part of a company whose main goal is to fundamentally change an industry is exciting and a huge pro. You'll also find all the regular startup perks too.

Cons

There's growing pains which can result in change occurring with no notice, and moving frenetically rather than moving quickly with measure. Flip side is growing pains means growth! Also, you'll put on at least 10lbs due to the complimentary food.

"Boys Club" and corporate culture

Pros

SoFi has business direction, and solid plans to take out competition. If any Fintech company will make it big, SoFi will. Though recently there was talk of layoffs and the business performance in Q1 affecting hiring, so maybe not.

Cons

Don't expect to be allowed work-life balance by senior management at SoFi. Most of the team works 9+ hours a day, with meetings frequently scheduled at 5pm or later. There's also a distinct "boys club" culture, especially within the Capital Markets team. Many of the employees are older white men who worked in finance previously and they've brought the Wall Street culture with them to SoFi. The company calls itself a startup but the term only applies in how old SoFi is, in all other aspects it's extremely corporate. The only focus is meeting aggressive business goals, which means that nothing else matters (including employee happiness, company culture, company values, etc.).

Pros

The pay is decent and most of the staff gets along. Essentially my coworkers at my own level, are great. Company events are fun, and they pay on your student loan.

Cons

The job burns employees out by setting goals that are far beyond reach and borderline harassing staff about situations that are beyond our control. They expect us to answer more phone calls than we can emotionally tolerate for hours on end, and don't give us enough time to document our notes. They have also recently cut our pay, but there is a complete freeze on all employee pay increase. When an employee maintains the same position, there is literally no such thing as a raise, regardless of production.
