Great place for fresh liberal arts graduates

Pros

Great benefits, great location, good community, beautiful office, the opportunity to work on social science topics of pressing concern. The young people working there are incredibly intelligent and idealistic.

Cons

High employee turnover as there is little opportunity for moving upward. The pay for entry-level positions is really low, especially for New York City. I also felt that there was a giant disconnect between senior management and everyone underneath.

Great colleagues, by and large; chance to work with world-leading researchers Interesting water cooler talk Broad mission is noble, worthwhile, and fairly unique among think tanks President has taken SSRC in positive direction, w/ expanded programs and more financing

Cons

Salary very low relative to most other NYC knowledge industry peers, fostering too-rapid rates of turnover Bureaucracy could be made more lean and efficient Behind the times in social media and web presence, needs to be faster

Pros

Great colleagues; Previous leadership was more focused on 'public' as compared to academic intellectual work . Casual atmosphere. Stock and trade used to be academic research fellowships - they have broadened out somewhat.

Cons

Very little mobility for junior staff - only 3 levels, Phd - Director, Masters - Program Coordinator, and BA - program assistant. Jobs dependent on soft money. Small programs that don't necessarily create a whole. Rather academic/staid. More US focused than international.
