Pros

Good benefits and decent pay - the federal Thrift Savings Plan is comsidered to be among the best 401k- type programs available. Pay is lower than comparable private sector jobs, but job security is better - a lot of people need SSA's services, and there's a lot of demand. Excellent camaraderie between employees - staff works together very well and they work together to provide top-caliber customer service. Good opportunity to advance if you're willing to work at it. Most managers and supervisors know their jobs well and try their best to create a positive work environment. Many employees committed enough to work for the long term, and this has mostly been encouraged.

Cons

Lack of staffing - never enough people available to handle all of the walk-in, call-in, and phone-in customer traffic. Too much emphasis on statistics and short-term numbers at the expense of good customer service. Too dependent on video-based teletraining. Changes in work rules due to legislation is a constant.

Pros

Some of the best reasons to work for the SSA is more of a laid back environment that helps you complete work and receive very good benefits while working. The longer you work for the SSA, the better the benefits become and you have a very flexible schedule.

Cons

Working at the SSA often comes with a lower salary compared to a corporation than a private sector. Some people at the SSA is also getting paid to just sit around some times where work can be more efficiently done if some people were fired, and then rewarding the employees that truly deserve it.

Pros

SSA offers excellent benefits which you would be hard-pressed to find in the private sector. Furthermore, and possibly more importantly, SSA is extremely flexible when it comes to leave-taking for valid reasons. Flex-time allows me to clock in when I get there and not haggle over minutes late or early.

Cons

The initial career advancement opportunities are substantial, however as you advance more, there are obviously fewer opportunities, but at the same time, the compensation is more drastically disparate from the private sector.
