Pros

- Lots of responsibility given to interns. Typically given their own project or two to work on over their time. If you need parts, you get parts. If you need testing, test away. You get full exposure to all the resources of the company, and are treated like just another employee. - Food on site is great and cheap (even if they have been raising the prices a bit). - Everyone is young. Groups will often take midweek breaks to play frisbee or sail in the evenings. - Good balance of casual and professional work environment. Show up with a clothes on, a willingness to work hard, and meet lots of people to get the job done, and you'll do great.

Cons

- Transitioning interns to hourly pay (I find) has added a strange dynamic to tracking hours and shortening breaks during the day so as to maximize your hours but not get home late. I'm less likely now to take a longer, relaxing lunch with my group. - Intern housing, while location is awesome, is expensive. - They don't offer parking on-site at Hawthorne for interns any more, so you have to take the shuttle, which restricts your flexibility.

Pros

SpaceX is by far the most interesting internship I've ever had. SpaceX trusts interns with valuable projects that will actually go towards company improvement. In my past two internships, which were with two different oil and gas operator companies, I felt as if my projects were just a way to waste my time. As an intern, my input is valued and I am treated with the respect that any full time employee would receive. I feel respected as a female engineer, and that my ideas are taken seriously which can be hard in other industries.

Cons

The only cons I have with this internship is that it is very time demanding, so work/life balance can be somewhat challenging. But the work is so interesting that the hours seem to fly by. I'm also not the biggest fan of the location being in McGregor.

Pros

SpaceX was a extremely fast-paced and rewarding experience. From day one, I was given the tools to learn almost anything about the company or the products I needed to for my projects. The launches are really cool to watch with other employees, especially knowing that you physically touched and worked on parts of that launch system. There is a very competitive and informative company culture that means most of the time everyone is very focused and attentive. I personally really liked the work hours, and I would be fine working more, but they cap interns at a certain amount per week. Partially because of this, most interns hang out together outside of work hours, and we had a lot of fun over the term.

Cons

Because of the group I was working with and the particular timing of my internship, I didn't get the chance to interact with my teammates as much as I would have liked to, and I ended up working on a slew of projects all over the site. Additionally, among interns there is somewhat an atmosphere of competition in terms of intensity, but it is not as bad as I was expecting. Unfortunately, it is very hard to get hired at SpaceX, and few interns get hired on full time.
