Pros

Great culture with smart people that care about their work. Leadership is transparent and thoughtful in decisions.

Cons

None so far with the company. I signed up for the commute so I cannot complain about that.

Hired and laid off

Pros

Incredible colleagues, catered meals (but see cons for more on this)

Cons

Maybe instead of those weekly catered meals, allowing folks to travel all over the planet, and "beers on tap," you could spend less and invest in your employees more. During my interview, I asked if layoffs were in the near future since they had experienced them in a messy, public manner not one year prior. I was told no, jobs are secure and the company is on the up and up. Unfortunately for me, this wasn't true and I was laid off after being given the opportunity to hire a freelancer. I was blindsided, given a small severance because I hadn't been on staff for very long, and told to not come into the office anymore (but still do work for the company to help them transition). Also, the health care plan isn't as good as it seems and there are no matching 401k benefits. Stocks are low, morale is low, and the team left behind will certainly be overworked and underpaid for output that only benefits the C-level. This was my dream job and it did not live up to the hype.

Thank you for your taking the time to share your feedback; I read each review and do not take the feedback lightly. The road of growth from startup to a large profitable business is dynamic, and we sometimes have to make changes down the road that might not be known at the time someone is hired. One of the most difficult parts about being a CEO is making difficult decisions that are necessary for the business, but impact our people. We wish we wouldn%E2%80%99t have to lose our talented team members, especially if they recently joined the team, but we did our best to assist employees with their transition to their next opportunity. Severance packages were provided in a fair and consistent manner to all employees who were impacted. We also provided resources like collecting information about our team members and sharing it with over 100 different companies, offering resume assistance, training sessions on resumes & interviewing, office hours on the weekend to help with questions, and a transition resources guide. Regarding benefits, you are correct that there is no 401(k) match. We offer an option for 100\% covered medical, dental and vision coverage (no premiums paid by employees) and hope this savings allow employees to set aside funds for retirement. We also listen to feedback from employees about our benefits and make changes to our offerings to better fit the needs of our employees. For instance, in 2019, we had feedback that employees would like access to a broader network as well as fertility coverage in our medical plans, so we have added both of these requests to our coverage for 2020. We strive to offer benefits that are competitive and meet the needs of our employees. I would be happy to speak with you one on one to discuss your feedback and share some insights about running this type of business and some of the difficult decisions that must be made. I extend my gratitude for your contributions to Sphero and wish you the best of luck with your next step in your career.
