Recession-proof, yet not a "career"

Pros

You are protected against things that may go on in a privately-owned salon. Cuts only- no color, highlighting, perms, etc. (Like a barbershop) Hourly pay- even if you are not busy, you still get paid. Easy to get a job here.

Cons

Training all-together (technical, company, etc.) lacks a bit. Commission is difficult to achieve, feel like numbers are pushed to benefit owner instead of stylist. BLACK-OUT PERIODS!! Stylists are not allowed to take time off during "black-out" periods ex: the week before and after Christmas, New Years, Easter etc. Clearly not a company that values stylists' ability to spend time with their families. Benefits are offered, but impossible to afford.

Pros

A good place to get to know how to use a POS system and cashiering. The regular customers are really nice.

Cons

Hours are never set. Schedules change weekly. Management doesn't communicate policy change. General dishonest work environment. Lots of corporate rules. They constantly have people quit or fire them, making the team work ethic hard to achieve.

Pros

The tips are good most of the time. The clientele is random which keeps the day interesting. The place is clean and orderly.

Cons

Working in an environment where quantity is more important than quality really bugs me. I've won customers back because of my great customer service and attention to details, but this gets unnoticed. When my haircut goes over 15 minutes I get the "watch your time" lecture, this is the only feedback I get from management. My morale is super low now after only a few months working part-time. The speed freaks (not drugs, haircutting) are getting praise from management but not much from customers. Last I check we're in the person service/hospitality industry. When money comes before people I know I'm not where I belong. I believe that keeping your eye on the ball (who's in your chair) will take care of the scoreboard (money). Obviously though awareness of the rules ultimately earns your keep. This is when management needs to complain! Too much nit-picking!
