Pros

It is a growing company and is still an industry leader. From agencies to the corporate offices in Bloomington, everyone is focused on taking care of the customer. When you work for State Farm you know you are representing the best name in insurance.

Cons

The only downside is that there is a lot of friendly competition among agents. There are many agents in big cities and sometimes it feels like there are too many. However, this could be viewed as an advantage because it keeps you on your toes and pushes you to be great.

Pros

The benefits. Although employer matching contributions into the 401(k) plan are nominal at best, they do offer a pension plan. Pensions are rarely offered these days at most corporations.

Cons

It's a popularity contest. They put people in charge that lack the skills to effectively manage a team (many managers act in illegal ways towards their employees and their managers don't do anything about it). The morale is bad at State Farm because everyone spends their time judging others and working 60 hour weeks. If they would refocus their attention to work away from judgement, the company might come into the 21st century. The company moves way too slowly for the marketplace because they are overburdened with too many channels and processes. Each department acts as a silo - independent of other departments.

Pros

Independence as an agent, used to have the ability to make good money. Ability to come and go at will. It used to be easier to do this. Current management style is to keep tabs on people in a threatening way.

Cons

company wants puppets, drastic change from several years ago. No longer fun or enjoyable. It used to be enjoyable being with other agents and there wasn't this cut throat atmosphere that exists today. Numbers were always important to management...today they are not only important, it is all the company seems to care about. Contracts have changed and mangament lied to persuade agents to accept the new contract and leave the one that gave us a good income and independence. The goal seems to be to curb the amount of money an agent is capable of earning.
