Pros

I think the job security at State Farm is one of the best things about State Farm. They treat their employees really well and I think the employees feel like they can trust State Farm to be a fair and honest long term employer. State Farm is very good to its policyholders and I feel like they really make a good effort to put the policyholders first in the business decisions that they make. This makes it easy to be proud of the work you do there. State Farm is very flexible with work schedules and will pretty much accommodate the needs of its employees. The employees there are really nice to work with and you have lots of opportunities to move around the company and try new things.

Cons

State Farm is located in central Illinois in Bloomington and I think this is what turns most people away from working there. It's a nice small town, but it can't provide the same type of opportunities that come from a bigger city. As such the pay is less than it probably otherwise would be if it were located in a big city. It's true that the cost of living is lower in central Illinois, but it's hard to say whether or not this makes up for the likely difference in pay. State Farm still tends to have a slightly "old-fashioned" way of doing business that can be frustrating when trying to adopt newer technologies.

Pros

State Farm has a muti-million dollar corporate park complete with mini-golf, pools and a lazy river. Fully funded pension.

Cons

The feedback is anymous and not specific to any behavior, making it worse than useless. The develop non-industry standard frameworks that are not transferable to any other jobs. People spend years working in languages that are unless outside the farm. They misclassify software developers as system analysts (according to descriptions provided by the department of labor, pay for systems analysts is significantly lower). Jobs are very specialized.
