Pros

If you want experience, this will give it to you. You can teach all levels pre-school to college. You'll get experience working with different students at the same time and working with special needs students.

Cons

Though it gives great experience, it's really not the best for children and their families. I am a private math tutor now, and that is the way to go; they will often pit you with a very distractible child doing basic reading (who really doesn't want to be there and wants to goof off), a middle school student with math homework, and an ACT student who really wants to learn. Your priorities as a teacher at Sylvan isn't to give everyone there money's worth (which the rate is around $45 an hour per student!) but baby-sitting and making sure your table behaves and is quiet. They didn't care how much I taught them, just how much I kept the noise at bay (which can be extremely difficult), and those poor students who really wanted something out of it really waste their time and money because I can't focus on any one student, and those loud students will definitely start to take high priority or else teachers and the directors will complain to you.

Pros

If you like to help kids and don't want to work full time, this will suit you. No lesson planning; already done for you.

Cons

The pay is so-so, $13/hr. at the time. Only Part Time work, therefore no benefits. You can't really count on a set schedule. You are expected to work the summers, which is fine. In my case, Director very arbitrary and inflexible when asking for a few weeks off to move.

Pros

The work that Sylvan does is remarkable and helps students tremendously. It's rewarding to see the growth that students make, when they are committed to a program, and when parents are committed to the program as well. As a teacher it is nice to go in and just focus on teaching.

Cons

The Sylvan company is unfair to its employees. The range of pay between center directors and directors of education is absurd. Considering that it is an educational company you would think it would pay its educators more. Instead, the sales people are the ones rewarded even though they have nothing to do with the overall program. Its sad that the someone who gets a student enrolled is paid more than someone who looks at the progress, meets with families, teachers, and manages the day to day life. It is a company focused on sales and how much money they can make, and less about the students. The support needed is not provided. The teachers are not paid well, despite how expensive the programs themself are. Sylvan cares about how much money it can make and less about the students. It does not support its staff, and only provides negative feedback even when things are out of a persons control. The hours the staff work in order to scrape by is ridiculous, and they are not rewarded for this.
