Pros

I enjoy working with a verienty of students in may subject areas. It is a wonderful part time job. My bosses are wonderful people and they make the job environment very nice. There is very little job turn over, so teachers are able to create a good relationship with students. You only work with small groups of students, so it is easy to balance time while tutoring.

Cons

Because it is a small buiesness, there is no room for any type of growth. The hours are minimul, but that is why it makes a good second, or part time job. Of course working with students can be stressful, but as teachers, we are able to handle any issue that generally comes up. You do have to have a BS in Education to work at Sylvan. I personally think that some Education majors should be a able to work there too.

Pros

It can be very satisfying to tutor kids in need, especially those less fortunate. The programs Sylvan has created are very good and make sure that the children are mastering what they need to master before moving on to more complicated material. It is very easy to learn the programs. The lessons are very straightforward, no previous teaching experience is necessary.

Cons

The hours are limited. Generally there are only 16-20 teachable hours per week. Mon - Thursday evenings and Saturday morning. When recording information about a teaching session, some information needs to be recorded in three or more different places which gets annoying and time consuming.

Pros

If you enjoy working with children, it can be rewarding to watch them learn. There are fixed lesson plans, which can be a positive or negative.

Cons

The only reason to work at one of these centers is if you really love the work. The compensation is barely minimum wage, well below what tutors make with most usual tutoring services. As mentioned above, the lesson plans are fixed, so there is very little actual teaching involved. Most of the students do not want to be there, and can be difficult to work with.
