      TIAA-CREF is going downhill

      Pros

      You have quite a bit of autonomy over projects and there are some intelligent people that are dedicated to their jobs. The retirement plan is good - each year, the company contributes a percentage of an employee's salary based on what age range they fall into.

      Cons

      The company has recently conducted layoffs and have let go of some really competent employees. It appears that the company does not have a good handle on how to address employee morale and balancing of workloads among the employee's that remain. The benefits are mediocre - PTO not competitive within the industry, only one health plan to choose, from, etc.

      Pros

      Depending on your age, TIAA-CREF automatically contributes between 10-18% of your base salary to a retirement plan after 6 months of service. The campus in Charlotte is beautifully landscaped and a relaxing place to take your lunch or break.

      Cons

      Layoffs. About 175 employees were laid off in Charlotte so far in August alone. Many of those former employees were key players and now there is no succession plan to fill those huge gaps that were created by the layoffs. This is not the first time that management has taken action before fully thinking about the consequences.
