Discount retailing in the USA is pretty tough, with Wally-world lurking and price competition coming from drug stores and grocery stores each and everyday. Under this strain the pressure is on employees to make up for the mistakes made by merchandising, store operations , and the IT system that needs updating .
This past Holiday season, the electronics dept was the sales driver of the store - yet that dept was constantly undermanned . Since we were losing those sales ( people were walking out of the store ) , the store was not making budget which meant cutting back on the support help, which meant more lost sales . During some periods the help in some depts was limited to the backstock people -which drove more customers away.
The systems need some updating and the training is lacking
Operations management is woeful - many young kids wander around in a daze due to inexperience and unrealistic expectations of these people
