Pros

Target has reasonable compensation for people with experience. If you are willing to relocate, you can watch your salary rise fairly rapidly, especially if you hit up a couple of destinations of higher costs of living and then 'retreat' back to somewhere more neutral cost wise. If you have job brand pride, Target is a good place to be, because they truly feel they have a better brand and seem to be committed to not just being 'another' discount retailer. The company also has reasonably accessible Internal promotion opportunities. I worked my way up from a 7 hour a week employee to a salary level Manager within two years. I ended up in a role in which I had no prior experience or even a college degree, although they seem to be placing a much heavier influence on college degrees these days.

Cons

Target seems to compensate Internal promotees far less than external hires within the same position(s). This may present situations where you are in a much more active or higher volume environment than a peer but bringing a lot less home. Work life balance is a joke with holiday work weeks and preparing the store for rumored 'visitors' (Management). Target is chock full of District and Regional (and higher) bosses that love to make stores scramble from the mere possibility that they may be coming to 'inspect' their store. This burns payroll overnight and at other non-peak shopping times, leaving the shoppers to suffer from reduced help (ie cashiers, floor help. etc...) They seem to blend or altogether eliminate salary level positions in the stores every year to save money. For those in my field. the Loss Prevention program is all but non-existent. Every year payroll hours and positions get slashed, but expectations from above remain the same (ie shrink numbers, Internal/External apprehensions).

Pros

Excellent opportunity to learn a large retail business at a fast pace. Primary concern is guest experience, sales are believed to come directly from how the customer feels and is treated. It's a cool place to work for the same reasons it's a cool place to shop. My peers are very helpful. I've gotten almost all of my questions answered as I go without feeling foolish.

Cons

Hard to have a life outside of the job. It is retail, so weekend work can be expected... but the lack of a set shift schedule for execs, and the needs of the business, can translate into some very long days... sometimes many days in a row.

Pros

I have met many great team members and the 10% discount is not bad. I work at a Super Target and having a starbucks has become very useful during the morning hours. Also, having a pizzahut is great for lunch time. I like the fact that I have been crossed trained and can work in many areas. Most of the Guests who shop at my store are friendly and I have quite a few who seek me out and for my help. We are a first name basis. My store just happens to be close to my home, so less travel time is better.

Cons

The management team at my store, mainly the Guest Service Team leads, show no respect towards the team members. Of course not all GSTLs are bad but some are unbearable and make your day miserable. You are rarely allowed to leave when your shift is up. This especially true at the end of the night. You may be scheduled until 10 but its not uncommon to leave until 11 or later. Only to be double backed at 7am! There are very few cashiers and sales floor workers. We are always in fast service and this is why nothing is completed at the end of the night. Many people in my store are now pulling double shifts because there is no coverage.
