Poor leadership in engineering

Pros

- Office space in Montpellier is ok, modern - Tech practices are ok - Software engineers are motivated and skilled (most) - Friendly atmosphere between engineers

Cons

- Office space in Montpellier is in middle of nowhere. - Management is a disaster, especially VPs and Directors, but also CTO. EMs are a better fit. - Poor management was caused by a flurry of fast-track promotions from senior engineers to EM and higher, without proper guidance and coaching. Most of them turned toxic, with new found "authority". I witnessed several times a VP reproaching EMs for bringing forward either own concerns or from the team. The CTO is very proud of that VP :( - Culture was so broken, that it led to massive turnaround in 2024 and 2025. - They act completely opposite to what they are saying. They praise empowerment while micromanaging, praise commitment while incapable of making clear plans, praise collaboration while creating friction between teams with conflicting features. Generally, they take "cool" words from industry and "apply" them in the most incompetent way. - There is no real coordination between product and engineering. - Too much politics. - As an engineer, you rather feel impeded than supported.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear your appreciation for the engineering talent, modern office space, and the friendly atmosphere among peers. We’re proud of the team we’ve built and the environment we continue to improve. That said, we take your concerns seriously. While we regularly gather internal feedback through surveys, listening sessions, and direct conversations, this is the first time we’ve encountered such a strong perception of negative behavior about our leadership and culture. We want to be clear: this does not reflect the culture we are striving for, and we’re committed to ensuring that every team member feels heard, respected, and supported. As our employees develop and mature, we are proud of our fair and calibrated promotion process, based on transparent career ladders. This gives every engineer and manager the opportunity to grow in their role, and enables us to recognize and reward top talent. We also provide coaching and support specifically for engineers who transition to management. Regarding the comment about the office location: our site is in a growing tech area, surrounded by several other companies, with daily food trucks, new restaurants, and a recently completed tramway and bus connection. We understand that commute preferences vary, but we’re excited by the improvements in accessibility and amenities over the past year. We acknowledge that the recent context of the company (merger) can bring challenges, and we’ve been focused on leadership development, cross-functional alignment, and building a culture that matches our values, not just in words, but in day-to-day behaviors. We’re not perfect, but we’re committed to learning and improving.
