Pros

Free food 4x a week

Cons

So I didn't believe the hype until I came here and now I believe it...there are a TON OF FAKE REVIEWS. Someone joked about how our glassdoor reviews are low and said we should start a campaign to create positive reviews and that employees should start writing positive reviews. I am shocked that people actually started writing fake reviews just to pull better talent in...it feels immoral and this is the last straw. I need to leave this place. Some of the other cons I've noticed over the years: - Sexual harassment - incompetent leaders - Backstabbing - Way too many junior members because that's all they are able to retain lately - Zero transparency because people that have been here a while think the info they know will shake up the company—HUGE RED FLAG! - they lure new hires in by offering an above-market salary....this place is imploding and the ceo is mentally unstable

I am sorry that your experience working at Telmate has not been positive. I am also surprised that you were told to write a fake review. I have always encouraged my employees (at multiple companies) to write honest and professional reviews. I will certainly look into any specifics around people being asked to write any "fake" reviews. Since joining the company I have made it my mission to bring transparency to the company at every level. I would sincerely appreciate any specifics that you may have regarding how to improve transparency. I also pride myself on having an open door policy and encourage any and all honest feedback. I myself would not want to work in an environment where I thought you might get fired if you rendered advice. A company is only as good as its employees and in order to make the company successful I need the help of each of our employees to drive the company forward. I look forward to working with you on overcoming the challenges of the company and if that is not possible, I wish you luck on your next opportunity. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Pros

Telmate was doing really innovative things in the jail video visitation industry while I was there--looking to use their custom-made, in-house designed video conferencing units to deliver entertainment, education, and other things to help inmates with their growth.

Cons

While I was there, the management structure was toxic, and suffered from multiple cases of nepotism.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review; It sounds like you did not have a positive experience with Telmate. On the positive side, I am very excited about some of the innovative things that we are working on for the future. I recently outlined our 18 month roadmap to the company and many of us are looking forward to the technical challenges. I also agree that there needs to be improvement across the board - from the management team and down. We are working every day to improve all aspects of the company. I am also a strong believer on hiring people based on skills and experience. (We will not succeed otherwise. Plus I want to work with the best peers and employees that I can.) We recently introduced a new career ladder with strong expectations of each role with regards to expectations and advancement. Also our new hiring rubric is allowing us to base hiring decisions on quantitive vs. qualitative measures.

Pros

Views are outstanding, free food and talented people in the group, well, what's left of the group. Apple and Linux shop.

Cons

If you are a thinking person, the business model is going to turn your stomach. No matter how you polish it, it boils down to fleecing people with little money, to pay a very high price to stay in touch with a loved one in jail. You can reason that if it wasn't this company, it would just be another company, but with all the great competition of cool places in the bay area, why even bother? Most of the management is pretty much a reflection of the lack of ethic required to be a part of a company like this.
