Pros

A lot of travel to and work in remote areas, which means plenty of time in nature. You may sometimes find cool rocks, crystals, bones, or rare insects. You learn a lot about local and regional stratigraphy. The office climate is usually pretty good. The other field techs are really cool. The out-of-town per diem is fairly generous but you’re expected to front the costs and get it reimbursed in your next check, which gets tight when your pay is $14-$16. They paid everyone 40 hrs of labor during the Texas snowmagedon to make sure it didn’t make anyone short on bills etc, which was a genuinely amazing gesture. I could go on, honestly.

Cons

Long and sometimes inflexible hours make having a dog painful or impossible if you’re single or if your significant other also works odd hours. Some field guys get sent out of town overnight the day after their wedding, even. Advancement to higher positions seems hit and miss, and some of the folks who’ve worked here longer are somewhat a cynical about “moving up”. I think they lowkey don’t hire women for this position. There are no pay incentives or bonuses for night work but you are occasionally expected to perform night work during a week that’s otherwise scheduled for daytime work. I could go on about this, too.
